We received a Deco BE85 from TP-Link a few months ago to test it. This mesh kit, which allows you to create a WiFi network and cover a home using several terminals, has the particularity of being one of the first to be WiFi 7 compatible. Problem: when received in mid-2023 , none of our devices were wifi 7 compatible and the standard is not yet finalized.

2024, the year of wifi 7

But things have changed, and the wifi 7 standard has been approved. We also received one of the first laptops equipped with a WiFi 7 chip using all the characteristics of the standard (320 MHz, 4K-QAM, MLO) the MSI Prestige AI Evo 13, compatible smartphones such as the ROG Phone 8 Pro from Asus and the Google Pixel 8 Pro, but also an Intel BE200 wifi 7 expansion card which only seems compatible with Intel motherboards (in our experience).

In the background, our test PC with its 10 Gb/s card, connected to the Deco BE85. In the foreground, the MSI Prestige AI Evo 13, which measures Wi-Fi 7 speeds.

In order to carry out our flow measurements, we also had to upgrade our PC serving as a file server by integrating an expansion card supporting the 10 Gb/s Ethernet standard, our 2.5 Gb/s adapters ( and even those of 5 Gb/s) now constituting the bottleneck of our network.

More than 3 Gb/s on average

Once our installation was in place, we were able to freely evaluate the speeds offered by the TP-Link Deco BE85 with nearby measurements of around 3.3 Gb/s on average in wifi 7, whether on the 6 GHz frequencies or using the MLO function (a kind of aggregation of the 5 and 6 GHz frequency bands).

To give you a concrete idea of what this represents, it is possible to transfer the equivalent of 4.6 GB, the size of a DVD, in less than 12 seconds. In comparison, one of the best performing 6E wifi kits, the Asus ZenWifi Pro ET12 (which we tested), tops out at 1.5 Gb/s; we are therefore not very far from a theoretical multiplication of speeds by 2.4 when switching from wifi 6 to wifi 7.

The ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition also does very well in wifi 7.

On smartphones, we reached 2.6 Gb/s on the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition. At this speed, it takes less than 2 seconds to download a game like Genshin Impact on your phone. For comparison, a Google Pixel 6 on 6E wifi maxes out at 1.8 Gb/s using 6E wifi on our Deco BE85.

The TP-Link Deco BE85 found its place in our model home.

We are currently continuing our measurements on the TP-Link Deco BE85 in our control home in order to verify the operation of the backhaul between the terminals and the possible gains linked to MLO (Multi-Link Operation) in a domestic environment. The full test will be published very soon on The Digitals.
