Lacie Portable SSD 2021: external SSD review

test conclusion

Chic aluminum housing and plenty of speed – the Lacie Portable SSD 2021 is a top SSD, even if it doesn’t quite make it for first place in the list of the best. However, the tested 2 terabyte version is expensive. If you don’t need quite as much storage space, you can also use the 1 terabyte model for half the price.

An external SSD is the perfect data storage for on the go: nice and small, light and at the same time much faster than a conventional external hard drive. The tested version of the Lacie Portable SSD 2021 is one of the more expensive models at 350 euros (at the time of testing), but it also offers a particularly large amount of storage with 2 terabytes.

A real miniature

The memory chips of an SSD don’t take up much space, and so the Lacie (dimensions 8.0×1.1×5.5 centimeters) easily fits in a trouser pocket or in the accessory compartment of a photo bag, despite the solid aluminum housing (see image below). Like most new SSDs, the Lacie relies on one when connecting USB-C socket. The included cable comes with two USB-C connectors. So it fits almost all newer notebooks and many tablets. When using mobile devices, the fact that the cable is only 13 centimeters long doesn’t bother you either. However, if you want to connect it to a PC with the older, but still common USB Type-A sockets, you have to buy an adapter or an extra cable (USB-C to USB-A) – preferably a longer one. Important for the SSD to reach its full speed: The connection socket must at least meet the standard USB 3.1 Gen2 (or USB 3.2 Gen2) with a maximum transfer speed of 10 gigabits per second correspond. Many USB-C sockets can do that, while many USB-A sockets are limited to 5 gigabits per second and slow down.

The data is racing

If the Lacie is plugged into a USB port with enough speed, it runs in top form: With special test programs (benchmarks) it scratched the mark of 1 gigabyte per second. When writing, it even set a new record of 987 megabytes per second (MB/s). In practice, the speed (as with all SSDs) is a bit slower, but it’s still great: So reads the Lacie large video files, for example with 730 MB/s, at the To write is she with 742 MB/s even a tad faster. With medium-sized and smaller files, the tempo drops a little more. On average, however, the Lacie still manages 618 megabytes per second when reading and 553 megabytes when writing. Only the HP Portable SSD P700 is clearly faster.
