already offer hardware acceleration for the AV1 codec, now firefox
also gets on the page.
According to a post by Bugzillarelayed by Neowinversion 100 of Firefox will soon support the AV1 video format!
Better late than never
Launched in 2018 by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix, Mozilla and Cisco, who together formed AOMedia (“ Alliance for Open Media ”), AV1 is a video codec jointly designed by these giants with a view to avoiding costly license fees. The AV1 codec then offers better video compression than the H.264 and VP9 codecs, and also reduces power consumption (therefore resulting in better battery life on laptops and tablets).
If Google and Microsoft quickly integrated the AV1 codec into their search engine, Mozilla will have taken its time before deciding to adopt this video format on Firefox. The foundation even claimed, a few months ago, that a minority of devices supported hardware acceleration for AV1. That’s why it wasn’t a priority for Mozilla. According to Microsoft, here are the requirements for your PC to benefit from the AV1 codec:
- CPU: 11th Generation Intel Core with Intel Iris Xe Graphics or newer
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 30 Series or AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series with necessary drivers
- OS: Windows 10 1909 or newer
As a reminder, version 100 of Firefox will be deployed on May 3. It is therefore on this occasion that the Mozilla browser will (finally) be able to have hardware acceleration for the AV1 video format.
