Land offers places – containers instead of tents: “Certainly not with me”

In the asylum dispute in St. Georgen/A. heading for escalation. Alternative solution instead of camping on site are rejected by the mayor. Mentioned alternative quarters unfinished, but land offers places.

Escalation – that’s what it boils down to in St. Georgen im Attergau. As is well known, the 17 asylum tents have to be cleared and removed after the mayor’s building permit decision. Local chief Ferdinand Aigner dismissed an alternative solution on the part of the Ministry of the Interior on the site of the initial reception center: “They asked if containers could be set up. I said no right away because there would be problems with the dedication and building rights again. In addition, we are making our contribution to the asylum problem in the community with the existing site more than enough”, the local manager also wants to “not accept the blame for the homelessness of the 100 tent residents promised by the care agency”. The state of Upper Austria is also standing behind the mayor’s approach and sees the federal government as having an obligation: “We make more than 100 places available every week. Who they fill them with is beyond our competence,” says the office of Integration Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer. Incidentally, all the politicians involved – from the mayor to the state councilor to the minister – are friends of the People’s Party. Alternative accommodation for the tent refugees in Hirschbach im Mühlkreis (16 places) and Ried im Innkreis (about 60 places) were explicitly discussed. But both are not ready for occupancy, in the Mühlviertel, where there is also a signature list against the quarter, one does not want to open up without the involvement of care organizations and in Ried a former Ukrainian quarter is being adapted for long-term occupancy.
