Landmark victory after a lightning own goal
Man City is currently overtaking Klopp with a lot of goals

The title race in the Premier League will remain exciting until the last matchday: Manchester City moves to the top for the first time this year with a landslide victory. But the competition can still counterattack.

Manchester City has submitted in the English Premier League championship race. Team manager Pep Guardiola’s team easily beat relegation-threatened newcomer Luton Town 5-1 (1-0) and moved past Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC into first place. Arsenal and Liverpool don’t play until Sunday.

The overwhelmingly superior Citizens took the lead early on. An own goal from Daiki Hashioka (2nd) got things off to a flying start, as Erling Haaland’s shot was unfortunately deflected with his head. In the second half, Mateo Kovacic (64th) followed up with a remarkable volley before Haaland (76th) increased the score with a penalty. The ex-Dortmund player scored his 20th goal this season. Ross Barkley (81′) scored the consolation goal with his second shot at the Sky Blues’ goal, before Jeremy Doku (87′) restored the old gap six minutes later. The final point was made by ex-Leipzig player Josko Gvardiol (90+3).

“With the win we moved ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool, who play on Sunday,” said coach Pep Guardiola about the situation. “They know if they leave points they have no chance. The only way for us is to win our games and increase the pressure. Luton was a difficult game, okay, but we score five goals. That’s the only message that we can send.”

Arsenal and Liverpool can push the Citizens, who have been unbeaten since the beginning of December, off the top of the table again on Sunday. Jürgen Klopp’s club welcomes Crystal Palace at Anfield Road (3 p.m./Sky). Kai Havertz and the Gunners host Champions League contenders Aston Villa (5.30 p.m./Sky).
