Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO: a super macro mode for x2 magnification

Chinese specialist in optics, Laowa offers a new fixed focal length dedicated to macro photography. The new 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO thus positions itself as a manual focus lens with an impressive 2:1 magnification ratio.

It also incorporates the main specificities of the range with its matte black design, its characteristic blue border, or its wide ribbed ring devoted to the development. We also note the presence of a ring which allows the adjustment of the diaphragm composed of 13 blades. As usual, Laowa plans to use the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO for several ecosystems, only for 24×36 mirrorless cameras:

• L mount, for Panasonic, Leica or Sigma
• Sony E-mount
• Canon RF Mount
• Nikon Z mount

Laowa highlights internal focusing or soft bokeh and promises “exceptional” sharpness. What we will be sure to check. The optical design is called apochromatic (APO) to minimize chromatic aberrations. 13 lenses divided into ten groups are used, three of which with ELD glass, again to reduce optical defects. To obtain the 2:1 ratio, you have to be at the minimum focusing distance of 20.5 cm.

If the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is attractive on paper, we must not forget a few characteristics to take into account in addition to the absence of autofocus. Completely devoid of electronics, the fixed focal length benefits neither from stabilization nor from a connector to make the link with the camera.

Price & availability

In all available mounts, the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO retails for an MSRP of €729. Currently in pre-order, it should be available during the month of July. However, Fnac announces availability for June 26.
