30 years ago, to the day, Last Action Hero was released on our French screens, John McTiernan’s film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger intended to parody typical action films.
While the feature fell short of its studio’s box office expectations and was both a critical and commercial disappointment, it has since become cult, with some calling it the most underrated of Schwarzenegger’s films. a film that we invite you to discover restored in 4K Ultra HD if it is not already done.
And according to the actor, if the film was not successful, it would be because he was campaigning for George HW Bush at the time when Bill Clinton ended up winning. Question of politics or not, the project is also known to have been reworked quite a bit during its writing. Thus, the final scenario differs greatly from the original. Last Action Hero follows the adventures of Danny Madigan (Austin O’Brien), an eleven-year-old movie buff who, thanks to a magic ticket, can transport himself to the – fictional – world of his favorite action movie character: Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger ), a modern-day crusader. Together, they face danger and always triumph, but things get complicated when ill-intentioned people seize the magic ticket and reach New York, where crime pays even more than in the cinema.
