Estrange character that Laurent Wauquiez. His long interview, in Point of this week, resembles him: he approaches the major subjects with ease, displays competence and determination, states many obvious facts and offers few solutions. We always feel like a sailor in search of the good wind that will fill his sails, even if it means changing course. Formerly centrist and pro-European, he was the man of the “social right” in 2012, denounced “assistantship” as a “cancer of French society” in 2011, whispered in the ear of Patrick Buisson (and vice versa) in 2012, castigated the strategy of Nicolas Sarkozy (designed by the precedent) after his defeat in 2013, eyeing his legacy since. If he’s not dizzy, it’s because his only compass is his own ambition.
