The wave of sympathy for Japan’s government after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has quickly subsided. In July, the assassination attempt by a 41-year-old Japanese helped Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to a major election victory. Now the motive for the crime threatens Kishida’s political strength.
