A 24-year-old defendant, detained at the Le Havre penitentiary center, committed suicide by cutting his carotid artery and injured a guard, we learned on Saturday from the prosecutor’s office, confirming information from Paris-Normandie.

According to prosecutor Bruno Diedonné, interviewed by AFP, the detainee “presented a suicidal desire”. The events took place on Thursday and the defendant, despite the intervention of the SAMU, died during the night from Thursday to Friday, the same sources said.

An investigation opened into the reasons for the death of the accused

The defendant, who mutilated himself with a piece of glass, turned the object against one of the supervisors who wanted to help him, injuring his arm. This injury is “slight”, said the Ufap union in a press release.

The investigation opened for attempted homicide on the guards is closed due to the death of the alleged perpetrator and an investigation into the death was opened since there was a priori a suicidal intention, indicates the prosecution. The defendant had been in preventive detention since last July on charges of attempted murder.
