The biggest beneficiaries are national daily press titles. But, Edwy Plenel, co-founder of Mediapart underlines, him, a paradox: it is the groups belonging to billionaires who receive the most aid to the press, that is to say public money.
8 million euros paid to the Figaro
Here is indeed the top three for 2021: more than 16 million euros for Les Echos-Le Parisienowned by Bernard Arnault, and nearly 8 million euros for The worldowned by Xavier Niel, Daniel Kretinsky and Matthieu Pigasse, the latter being “just” a millionaire.
Finally, nearly 8 million euros were paid to the Figaro, owned by the Dassault group. The subsidies taken into account include so-called direct aid (aid for pluralism, support for carrying, aid for investment), aid for the distribution of the national daily press (collected by titles but then transferred to a messaging system), and aid for social modernization benefiting former employees of the titles concerned.
