A processor with graphics solution designed by AMD to equip entry-level laptops.
Announced at Computex 2022 in Taipei last week, the AMD Mendocino is a new APU integrating Zen 2 cores. Very quickly, two mobile console manufacturers announced the AYANEO 2 and the Ayn Loki which exploit the new component.
Four times fewer compute units
Everyone saw these consoles as possible competitors to Valve’s famous Steam Deck, which is powered by another AMD APU called Aerith. It is a derivative of the Van Gogh solutions which seem, in theory, quite close to Mendocino.
In theory only, because if we are to believe a leak of sensitive documents relayed by VideoCardz, the APU Mendocino would be much less muscular. It is a question of proposing only two calculation units within the chip, when Van Gogh integrates four times more.
The device published by our colleagues leaves little room for doubt, and this means that Mendocino will have to settle for 128 stream processors against 512 on the Aerith chip of the Steam Deck. In addition, we note that Mendocino will support two channels of LPDDR5 memory for a capacity ranging from 4 to 32 GB.
