A few days before its formalization, Google’s Pixel 7a shares some details about it, including the size of its screen and the characteristics of its camera.

Last month, we were able to discover a first glimpse of what the Google Pixel 8 should look like. Now, let’s take a look at the specifics of Pixel 7a, the new mid-range flagship from the American giant.

Pixel 7a: finally on the new screen side

In a handful of days, Google will lift the veil on many devices. It will hold its annual conference on May 10 to finally unveil its first foldable screen smartphone or its brand new touchscreen tablet, the Pixel Tablet. But it is also on this occasion that the Mountain View company will present its new mid-range smartphone to us: the Pixel 7a. And believe us, it’s only “mid-range” in name!

On Twitter, Roland Quandt shared a preview of a batch of official visuals allowing us to have a very concrete overview of what awaits us with the Pixel 7a. First of all, the device will be equipped with a 6.1-inch AMOLED FHD + panel and will offer a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. A first in the “Pixel a” range since the previous model is contented with a screen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

A mid-range smartphone very close to the Google Pixel 7?

Determined to make its Pixel 7a a benchmark in the field of mid-range smartphones, Google will incorporate a 64-megapixel main photo sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle into its new device. For comparison, the Pixel 6a had a 12-megapixel camera and ultra-wide angle. Note that it will be powered by the Google Tensor G2 chip, the same found in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, and that it will be the first in the range (yes, again) to offer charging wireless.

The Pixel 7a is unmistakably shaping up to be much more than a mid-range device. The smartphone is even relatively close to its cousins, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Anyway, and rest assured, the price of the Pixel 7a should not be much higher than its predecessor, despite the many changes made this year. According to the various rumors, it should indeed be marketed at the price of 499 euros (about 40 euros more than the Pixel 6a at launch).

Google Pixel 7

  • Its value for money
  • A premium design
  • A nice bright screen

More premium, more powerful, and even more comfortable in photos, the Pixel 7 is a real success and confirms the good momentum of Google initiated last year. Like its elder, the Pixel 7 Pro, it disgusts all the competition in terms of value for money and even manages to match or supplant smartphones more expensive than it.

Its charging speed, which is too slow, is its only major flaw. The rest is only minor or logical. It gets a little warm, isn’t the best performer for powerful 3D games, and its battery life isn’t best in class. Once we are warned of all this, the Pixel 7 does not offer any unpleasant surprises.

Finally, the most difficult thing is not to know if it is the best at its price: it is. The real challenge is knowing who to choose between it and the Pixel 6 Pro, now available at almost the same price, or 799 euros. The answer is in the format. If you swear by rather compact smartphones, the Pixel 7 remains a better investment. It will be more powerful, more enduring, prettier and a little better in photos. If you love having fun on a large screen, and if for you, the telephoto lens is an obligation, then turn to the 6 Pro. In any case, there will be no wrong choice.
