Leaks on Zen 5 and Zen 6 architectures: AMD between “Nirvana” and “Morpheus”

The sweet litany of codenames continues for processors AMD, which is slowly preparing for the launch of Zen 5 and Zen 6.

While it is slow to roll out its latest RDNA 3 graphics architecture to support the launch (last December, already) of the Radeon RX 7900XT and 7900XTX, AMD seems to be making pretty good progress on the CPU side.

Names of architectures, CCDs and cores

If you have never had it, you have probably forgotten that the Zen 4 architecture also responds to another name at AMD. To baptize CCDs (CPU complex dies), it is indeed a question of using a very different term.

Thus, for the Zen 2 architecture, the CCD is baptized Aspen Highlands. On Zen 3, it’s called Brekenridge, and Durango is used for the Zen 4 CCD. other denomination.

This time, we are therefore talking about Valhalla, Cerebrus and Persephone for the cores of the architectures, in order, Zen 2, Zen 3 and Zen 4. Proof that there is no question of idleness among AMD engineers, a leak tells us the names of the next two CPU architectures from the firm headed by Lisa Su.

Zen 5 on track for release in 2024

Business logic would dictate that these architectures be called Zen 5 and Zen 6, but that is not yet in question. Indeed, the leak of the day specifies that the name of Eldora has been retained for the CCD Zen 5.

The Zen 5 core itself is dubbed Nirvana, and the architecture is based on TSMC’s 3nm EUV node. For these Zen 5 processors, it seems that the phase devoted to energy management has been completed with work that spanned from January 2021 to December 2022. The Zen 5 design must be drawing to a close anyway, the release is planned for 2024.

Afterwards, AMD is planning Zen 6, and for once, we don’t have any details on the name used for the CCD of this architecture. The core, on the other hand, is called Morpheus and it relies on the 2 nm EUV node. There, work is in full swing, and for the “power management” phase mentioned in the leak, the activity began last January. It still continues.
