BEIRUT, March 21 (Reuters) – Lebanese central bank governor Riad Salamé was indicted on Monday for illicit enrichment, investigating judge Ghada Aoun told Reuters.
Judge Ghada Aoun, public prosecutor at the Mount Lebanon Court of Appeal, clarified that Riad Salamé had again refused to appear for a hearing scheduled for Monday as part of the investigation into his management of the central bank. Lebanese, which he has led for almost 30 years.
Contacted by Reuters, Riad Salamé recalled that the audit report he had commissioned had shown that no public money had contributed to his personal fortune.
His attorney said last Friday that the charges of fraud and illicit enrichment against his client were completely unfounded and based on “unsupported media speculation.”
