Leclerc, Amazon… A complaint filed against 8 online sales sites for misleading promotions

UFC-Que Choisir has filed a complaint against Amazon, ASOS, Cdiscount, E.Leclerc, La Redoute, Rue du Commerce, Veepee and Zalando for fraudulent promotions. The association criticizes them for offering good deals that are not.

After the energy mediator against malicious suppliers, it is the turn of the UFC-Que Choisir to denounce the fraudulent promotions of eight online sales sites. Amazon, ASOS, Cdiscount, E.Leclerc, La Redoute, Rue du Commerce, Veepee and Zalando are affected by this complaint which accuses sellers of offering good deals that are not good. The calendar owes nothing to chance either, since the summer 2023 sales are fast approaching.

The UFC-What to choose has studied 6596 specials featuring a barr price and only 3.4% of them would be real bargains. Specifically, more than 9 out of 10 listings showed falling prices but based on a misleading estimate. Recommended retail price, origin or Old price, beware of these mentions, alerts the association in a press release published this Wednesday and relayed by The Parisian. Especially since the data that allows these announcements are held by the merchant, which excludes any real comparison.

A deceptive commercial practice, of which the trader is guilty

We see that it is very difficult to tell the difference between a price reduction announcement that complies with the regulations, and an announcement that does not. Not only are the former mixed with the latter, but they all adopt exactly the same presentation, whether in terms of content or format (size, color, font, etc.), notes UFC-Que Choisir.

More broadly, the great similarity of these ads misleads consumers, leading them to consider these crossed out prices as price reductions in accordance with the regulations, and not as a simple comparison. It therefore clearly reveals a deceptive commercial practiceof which the merchant is guilty, is suing the association.

In addition to its complaint against Amazon, ASOS, Cdiscount, E.Leclerc, La Redoute, Rue du Commerce, Veepee and Zalando, the association seized the European Commission to alert it to the drives of professionals. The 2019 Omnibus Directive, which protects European consumers on the Internet, should thus be reinforced, according to the association.
