Amber Heard has filed an appeal in Johnny Depp’s defamation trial. Her ex-husband is following suit and is now also appealing.

Next round in the legal battle between Amber Heard (36) and Johnny Depp (59). According to US media reports, the actress filed an appeal against the verdict in the defamation lawsuit against her ex-husband on Thursday. Johnny Depp is now following suit and also appealing, as among other things the “People” magazine and the New York Post Report.

Accordingly, he is resisting the fine of two million dollars that the court in Virginia imposed on him. Heard was awarded this sum as damages for her counterclaims. The jury awarded Depp $15 million in damages. However, Heard is only required to pay $10.35 million under a Virginia law that limits punitive damages.

Why is Johnny Depp also appealing?

An unspecified source believed to be close to Johnny Depp told People magazine: “If Ms. Heard is determined to proceed with the litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr. Depp will appeal at the same time to ensure that the full file and all relevant legal issues will be considered by the Court of Appeal.”

In early June, Depp won the defamation lawsuit against Heard after around six weeks of the trial. He sued her for $50 million for an article she published in the Washington Post in 2018. In it, she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. She did not mention her ex-husband by name. Depp nevertheless claimed the post ruined his career, damaged his reputation and cost him a lot of money. Heard then filed a $100 million counterclaim against her ex.
