Legendary bad like Berlin: The Saudi-Spanish Tasmania is racking up negative records

Legendarily bad like Berlin
The Saudi-Spanish Tasmania is making negative records

They are now officially as unsuccessful as Tasmania Berlin once was in the Bundesliga: The Spanish club UD Almeria experienced their next bitter disappointment against FC Sevilla and thus extended two horror series. The club spent a lot of money before the season.

UD Almeria was able to hope for redemption for 80 minutes, then the historical horror series of the bottom of the Spanish Primera Division table continued: Almeria squandered it so badly in the 2-2 (1-0) draw in Spain’s La Liga in the Andalusian duel against Sevilla FC longed-for first win since May 20, 2023. With 31 games without a win across the season and 28 games not won from the start of the season, Almeria expanded the negative records in Spain’s elite class – and drew level with the legendarily bad Berlin Tasmania.

The then hopelessly overwhelmed Bundesliga team from what is now the federal capital has held the record in Germany’s elite class since the 1965/66 season with 31 games in a row without a win – back then Tasmania won on the first and penultimate matchday. Schalke scratched this mark with 30 games without a win from January 2020 to January 2021. The latest first win of the season in the German League One was celebrated by 1. FC Nürnberg, who in 2013/14 were the first Bundesliga team to remain winless in the entire first half of the season and then beat TSG Hoffenheim 4-0 at the start of the second half of the season in the 18th attempt.

In Almeria, Adrian Embarda (38th) scored against the also badly hit former European Cup series winner Sevilla, but former Bundesliga professional Dodi Lukebakio (81st) and the Argentinian Lucas Ocampos (81st) gave the home team the next blow. The equalizer by Marko Milovanovic (90+5) was just a consolation prize. Almeria, which has a Saudi owner, had signed almost two dozen new players for 52 million euros before the season – only league leaders Real Madrid bought more expensively.
