The Republic on the move and its allies MoDem and Horizons recorded an unprecedented underperformance, far from the absolute majority (289 seats) that some close to Emmanuel Macron had always hoped to obtain in recent days: the smallest majority of the Fifth Republic. According to the latest estimates from Ifop, the presidential majority obtains between 245 elected officials at the Palais Bourbon ahead of the Nupes (131), the National Rally (89) and the Republicans-UDI (64).

During the first round of the legislative elections on Sunday June 12, President Macron’s camp came very slightly ahead against the united left, Nupes, of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, against a backdrop of record abstention (52.49%), opening thus the game of the second round. This Sunday, the French once again shunned the ballot box with an abstention rate of 54% according to estimates.

Who are the deputies elected in the first round?
Will the Macron camp be able to govern the country? Nothing is less sure. Heavyweights of his movement were beaten, such as Christophe Castaner (ex-Minister of the Interior and president of the LREM group – renamed Renaissance – in the National Assembly), Brigitte Bourguignon (Minister of Health), Amélie de Montchalin (Minister of Ecological Transition), Richard Ferrand (President of the National Assembly) and the Secretary of State for the Sea, Justine Benin.

In 2017, an absolute majority for LREM
In 2017, the ballot had already been largely shunned by the French, who were only 47.3% to have moved. Emmanuel Macron, then newly elected President of the Republic, had nevertheless succeeded in his bet to obtain an absolute majority in the National Assembly. The Republic on the Move (LREM) and its ally the MoDem won 350 seats, very well beyond the absolute majority of 289 seats. The alliance between Les Républicains (LR) and the UDI obtained 130 seats, its worst score under the Fifth Republic. The Socialist Party and its allies (PRG included) won 43 seats, far from the 302 seats of the outgoing Assembly. Finally, France Insoumise and the PCF won 27 seats. With 13.2 of the votes, the FN (now National Rally) was unable to obtain a group in the Assembly.
