Legislative: François Ruffin calls for the indexation of wages to inflation

The LFI deputy for the Somme François Ruffin called on Tuesday for the indexation of wages to inflation, a measure which does not appear in the LFI program for the legislative elections, to fight against “the erosion of purchasing power”. “On purchasing power, the first thing to do is to index wages to inflation,” said franceinfo the former journalist, who launched last week in Flixecourt (Somme) his campaign for the legislative elections of June 12 and 19.

Fight against the erosion of purchasing power

“I would like there to be an indexation of wages to inflation”, as existed in France until 1983, because “inflation is not cyclical, it is linked in particular to the environmental crisis which is producing an inflation of raw materials”, he explained, while acknowledging that the measure does not appear in the program of LFI or the New popular ecological and social union (Nupes) for the legislative elections.

“If ever you let the inflation of products occur and during this time wages stagnate, that mechanically produces an erosion of purchasing power, not only for people who are on the minimum wage, not only for people who are on social minima”, he warned.

A government with Jean-Luc Mélenchon?

“Do you realize the modesty of my request: I am not asking to index salaries to the first five French fortunes”, while “under Macron, in five years, the first five French fortunes have seen their fortunes triple” , he quipped. “We are like in the old regime, the lords are exempt from taxes”, also lamented the LFI deputy, denouncing a “situation of major injustice” since “today, the small pay big and the big ones do not don’t pay taxes.”

“Amazon, Hermès, Bernard Arnault, Mulliez, Total must be taxed according to their profits” and “we will find room for maneuver to make the economy breathe”, he pleaded.

He also answered in the affirmative to his participation in a possible Jean-Luc Mélenchon government if the latter wins the elections and becomes Prime Minister.
