Four days before the first round of the legislative elections, the Republicans met on Tuesday for a last strategic council before the ballot. The opportunity to mobilize their electorate and display the ambitions of the right. And if LR does not officially set a quantified objective, the party hopes to keep its influence in the National Assembly.
D-4 before the first round of the legislative elections. Like the candidates of the major parties, those of the Republicans are aiming for qualification in the second round. Because in the event of a duel against the NUPES or the National Rally, the right hopes to get out of it by taking advantage of a carryover of votes in its favor. The goal: to prevent Emmanuel Macron from obtaining an absolute majority, and thus to force him to consider the LR deputies. “We will be the determining players in the next five years,” even says Christian Jacob, who, despite unflattering polls, promises to “create a surprise” on Sunday.
LR, an extra force?
But then does the right want to be an auxiliary force for Emmanuel Macron? “Certainly not”, answers Christian Jacob, the president of the party. “On the other hand, we have always been force of proposal. We have never been in a blocking attitude, at any time. The texts which go in the right direction, we know how to vote them, those with which we are not OK, we know how to oppose harshly, and we will continue in this spirit,” he adds.
The presidency of the party in everyone’s head
And while his departure after these elections is recorded, the president of the party has been concentrating criticism for several weeks. “He is already retired,” says a strategist, who criticizes him, like others, for the lack of a national Republican campaign.
LR in particular did not hold a meeting like his opponents Marine Le Pen or Jean-Luc Mélenchon. A discretion that irritates, as much as it sharpens ambitions behind the scenes to succeed him.
