The President of the Republicans Christian Jacob told Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday of his refusal to enter into “any logic of pact” and considered that it was “up to him to put proposals on the table”, he assured after their interview at the Elysée. “I repeated to the president that there was no question for us of entering into what could be a betrayal of our voters. We have campaigned in the opposition, we remain in the opposition of determined matter but responsible”, said Christian Jacob, who was the first of the party leaders received by the Head of State at the Elysée.
“We will never be in the blocking of institutions but there is no question of entering into a logic of coalition pact, participation or anything of this nature”, he added during a press briefing in the Elysée gardens. “It is he who is President of the Republic, it is he who is asking for this meeting, it is up to him to put proposals on the table”, he hammered.
“No proposals” from Emmanuel Macron
The Head of State “listened” but “there were no proposals”, said Christian Jacob, who claims to have given his analysis “with frankness”. According to his report, he notably told Emmanuel Macron that the latter “bears a very heavy responsibility” in the current situation, having “instrumentalized the extremes” and “having wanted to weaken us by poaching”, which “resulted in a weakening of the Republic and of democracy”.
As for a possible departure of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, confirmed until further notice at Matignon on Tuesday by Emmanuel Macron, “I told him that it was his responsibility” and that “it was his sole choice”, assured Christian Jacob. “The government would be well advised not to ask for confidence” but if “it asks for it, we will not vote for it”, he assured.
A little earlier on France Inter, the boss of the Republicans had assured that LR would not be the “crutch” nor the “spare wheel” of the majority. “The answer will not be in tricks and shenanigans,” he assured.
