The day after the first round of the legislative elections, the politicians Jérôme Jaffré and Dominique Reynié were the guests of Europe Matin this Monday. With 25.75% of the vote for the Together coalition against 25.66% for Nupes, the French people voted “as if the presidential election had not taken place” affirms Jérôme Jaffré.

With an estimate of 275 to 310 deputies elected for Emmanuel Macron, against 346 outgoing deputies, it is a real setback and a more difficult five-year term than the previous one which opens for the head of state. “We voted in this first round of the legislative elections as if we were at mid-term and not at the start of the term,” said political scientist Jérôme Jaffré, guest of Europe Matin on Monday. “It’s amazing!”

A sanction vote?

The Together! bringing together En Marche, the MoDem and Horizons came out on top with 25.75% of the vote on Sunday evening according to the latest figures from the Ministry of the Interior. Nupes is neck and neck with 25.66% of the votes collected. “We voted as if the presidential election had not taken place, as if the government, the Macronist ministers and deputies had to account for their actions”, he continued on Europe 1. “As if the French in a way, were not able, in the presidential election, to say what they thought of Emmanuel Macron and therefore they do so during these legislative elections and it is quite severe”, judge-t- he.

“There is no leftist electoral push”

For political scientist Jérôme Jaffré, the results of the first round of the legislative elections did not show a “left electoral upsurge”. “It’s not an alternative vote, it’s not a vote to build another majority, there’s no leftist electoral push, there’s no Nupes electoral push that revolves around 25-26%, that is to say the equivalent of what the political parties that make up the Nupes did, 30% if we add up all the votes on the left, so there is no construction alternative vote, which effectively amplifies the democratic and political crisis,” he said.
