The traditional German manufacturer Leica is famous for its binoculars and cameras. The latter are very popular with photographers, whether amateur or professional. For many, however, such a camera remains a dream, as the cameras can easily cost 5,000 euros or more. There is now an inexpensive alternative that is particularly interesting for smartphone photographers.

With “Leica LUX”, Leica Camera AG is bringing its own professional camera app to the iPhone. It is intended to bring the “unmistakable image aesthetic” to the smartphone. According to the manufacturer, the application is aimed at both beginners and experienced photographers.

Leica LUX offers the opportunity to experiment with well-known Leica lenses, including the Summilux-M 28 f/1.4 ASPH and the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH. A proprietary image processing engine is used to create the appropriate look during lens simulation – including the bokeh effect. New lenses and looks are regularly added through updates.

Taking photos with your smartphone: apps, accessories and tutorials

Millions of images are put online every day. If you want to stand out from the crowd with your smartphone photos, you’ve come to the right place. Netzwelt teaches you how to take photos with your smartphone. Here you’ll find apps, accessories and tutorials.

In addition, there is a selection of color gradations and film presets that correspond to those of the Leica cameras. Colors and contrasts are supposed to be displayed differently and more naturally than with the pre-installed iPhone camera app.

Freemium model

The camera app offers both an automatic mode and a manual mode with the option to change parameters such as exposure compensation or shutter speed. However, Leica charges for this.

In addition to the free Leica LUX app, the manufacturer offers an extended range of functions in the Leica LUX Pro subscription model – the whole thing costs 7.99 euros per month or 79.99 euros per year. The Pro version can be tried out free of charge for two weeks beforehand.

In addition to the manual setting options, there is access to all available lenses and looks (limited in the free version), more file formats for export and much more. The regular extensions are also initially reserved for the Pro version.

Now available in the App Store

The Leica LUX app is compatible with all iPhones from the iPhone SE onwards or with iOS 17. The following link takes you directly to the application in the App Store.
