L’Emmerdeur on Arte: this little detail nods to the interpreter of François Pignon

Discover which trivial element pays homage to the singer Jacques Brel in “L’Emmerdeur”, a film in which he plays François Pignon alongside Lino Ventura.

Jacques Brel is entitled to a wink in L’Emmerdeur, a comedy written by Francis Veber in which the hero is played by… Jacques Brel!

The story begins when Ralph Milan must assassinate Louis Randoni, who has crucial information that he is about to reveal during a trial. He settles in a hotel opposite the courthouse, but does not know that in the next room, the failed suicide attempt of a certain François Pignon (Brel) will cause him to miss his target…

After ten minutes of film, Milan (Lino Ventura) goes to a bistro to have a coffee. In this scene, a fellow comes to tell him that his car is in the way outside. Before the tone rises, the bartender intervenes. A bartender who holds in his hands… a disc by Jacques Brel!

Exactly released in 1973, the year of the film, this LP is called Jacques Brel’s golden record. For the anecdote, we find the titles: La valse à mille temps / When all you have is love / The first names of Paris / On the square / In the spring / The lady patroness / Don’t leave me / Marieke / The dying man / We don’t forget anything / He can to rain / The Flemish.

The bartender is also played by Edouard Molinaro, director of the film, which means that this “product placement” is not a coincidence!

In May 1973, Jacques Brel’s first film, Le Far-West, was released, which was a public and critical failure, and in September, L’Emmerdeur. The success of this last film does not console Brel for the failure of the first, and the young actor puts an end to his career in the cinema (it has already been 7 years since he stopped the scene and 5 since he no longer made of disk).

He will die in 1978 of a massive pulmonary embolism after having released a last disc the previous year, The Marquesas.
