The latest BMW Digital Key update brings brand new cross-platform compatibility.

In other words, it is now possible to share your BMW key between iOS and Android smartphones.

The BMW Digital Key evolves

For several years now, BMW has been offering its Digital Key with certain models. This function allows you to transform a smartphone into a vehicle key, with the possibility of locking/unlocking, but also starting your vehicle from your phone.

Today, BMW is evolving this Digital Key, allowing the user to share a digital key on several platforms, between iPhone and Android smartphones. Until now, the transfer was only possible from one iPhone to another.

Sharing a BMW Digital Key easier than ever

So, with the new update, keys can be easily passed on to friends or family members using the “ share native to the smartphone. As a result, the BMW Digital Key can be shared in the form of a simple link, which can be sent to a (trusted) recipient by email, SMS, WhatsApp or Messenger… Users nearby can also share the key via Apple AirDrop or Android Nearby Share services.

By clicking on the link, the recipient will be able to automatically add the digital key to their wallet, without any external application required. Apple Watch owners can easily transfer the BWM Digital Key to their connected watch. BMW indicates that in some cases an activation code will need to be entered into the vehicle for security reasons.

According to BMW: This new upgrade is the result of close collaboration between BMW and its partners Apple, Google and Samsung, under the umbrella of the Car Connectivity Consortium. It marks another milestone for the BMW Digital Key, on the way to full cross-platform interoperability, and securing the status of smartphones as digital vehicle keys. »
