Ahead of CES, Lenovo lifted the veil on three new Laptops intended primarily for the business world and productivity: the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 and IdeaPad Pro 5i. We take stock of the new on-board features.

Since CES 2024 is fast approaching, Lenovo is getting in tune with the market by adding, like its competitors, the latest Intel “Meteor Lake” processors to its various laptops. This week, the Chinese manufacturer lifts the veil on its new ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 2-in-1; but also on a new IdeaPad Pro 5i, available in 14 and 16 inch versions. The latter will be able to embed a dedicated graphics card, as an option.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 upgrade to Meteor Lake!

But let’s start with the high end, and therefore with the ThinkPads. If the changes compared to the 2023 models remain modest, these 2024 versions adopt a completely new technical sheet thanks to the arrival of new Intel processors. As with the competition, AI is at the center of the game with the inclusion of an NPU on Meteor Lake chips. The latter will initially struggle to be truly exploited, but it allows the new ThinkPads to be ready for the future.

For the moment, Lenovo does not yet specify the precise references of the processors available on its ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad 64 GB of RAM in LPDDR5x. Up to 2 TB of storage (PCIe Gen 4 SSD) can be added and in both cases we will find a 14-inch 2.8K OLED panel, capable of reaching 400 nits of brightness and 120 Hz. Both products will also be powered by a 57 Wh battery.

At 14.96 mm thick and 1.09 kg, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon will however be a little more compact than its convertible cousin, the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1. The latter will weigh 1.32 kg for 15.49 mm thick.

Both expected in April 2024, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad

IdeaPad Pro 5i: 16 or 14 inches, with dedicated GPU… or without

More accessible, the IdeaPad Pro 5i must be marketed in the coming days, Lenovo mentioning a release at the end of December, at a starting price set at 1,099 euros (including tax this time).

As mentioned above, the device is available in 14 and 16 inch versions, but these two versions can accommodate up to a Core Ultra 9, coupled with a maximum of 32 GB of LPDDR5X and 1 TB of SSD (PCIe Gen 4 ). In both cases, it will also be possible to opt (optionally) for a dedicated graphics card: the GeForce RTX 4050 from NVIDIA. All these beautiful people will also be powered by an 84 Wh battery, but connectivity will however be limited to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. No Wi-Fi 7 on the horizon, therefore.

Things get a little more complicated in terms of display, since each model can be equipped with a choice of two different screens. On the 16-inch version, Lenovo offers either a 2K OLED panel, 100% DCI-P3, 16:10 and 120 Hz; i.e. a 2.5K IPS panel, 100% sRGB, 16:10 and 120 Hz. In both cases, the image quality should nevertheless be good, even very good. Same approach for the 14-inch version of the IdeaPad Pro 5i, since Lenovo offers here either a 2.8K OLED panel, 100% DCI-P3, 16:10 and 120 Hz; i.e. a 2.8K 100% sRGB IPS panel, 16:10 and 120 Hz.

In terms of dimensions, finally, the 16-inch IdeaPad Pro 5i is 17.5 mm thick and weighs 1.95 kg; while the 14-inch version sticks to 15.99 mm thick and 1.46 kg.
