If Samsung stands out as the best manufacturer of high-end Android tablets, Lenovo is also eyeing this market, thanks in particular to its Tab P12 Pro tablet from Lenovo.

On paper, the specs of Lenovo’s Android tablet rival the best devices from Apple and Samsung, including its large 12.6-inch screen that boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, massive battery of 10,200 mAh and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor to support the workload. The device is sleek and shaped in a way that will appeal to most consumers. With a very low starting price, the Tab P12 Pro from Lenovo is not as expensive as its competitors… Still, it is not yet at the level of tablets from Samsung and Apple.

Looking at this spec sheet, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is unmistakably meant for productivity and entertainment. Two dimensions that take advantage of a screen with a high refresh rate and a very enduring battery. The tablet runs Android 11 – which isn’t the latest version of Google’s operating system – but retains useful one-handed features and multitasking quirks. An update to Android 12 was previously scheduled for March 20, 2022, but has since been pushed back to June 30.

An elegant design

There’s no denying that Lenovo has once again built an industrial and sleek tablet. The Tab P12 Pro weighs 565 grams, slightly less than its 12-inch competitors. The tablet only gets heavier with the addition of the Precision Pen 3 and optional keyboard accessory, which bring quality of life improvements to the device.

The Tab P12 Pro is constructed with a mix of aluminum and metal, making it durable yet lightweight. It’s one of the thinnest tablets on the market today, coming in at 5.6mm, making it a solid option for users looking for portability. Even then, Lenovo has managed to slip a host of ports and connectors around the tablet, including USB-C for data transfer and 30W fast charging, four side JBL speakers, a fingerprint sensor, pins for the keyboard accessory and a microSD card slot.

The only thing missing here is a 3.5mm headphone jack for audiophiles and gamers who thrive on zero-latency audio. Note that Lenovo has included a USB-C to 3.5 mm dongle in its box, a welcome gesture. On the back of the tablet are two notable features: a dual-camera array and a magnetic area for a stylus. The main camera is a 13 MP camera capable of autofocus and the second is a 5 MP wide-angle lens. While photos and videos look good quality on the Tab P12 Pro.

The strength of the stylus

There’s no doubt that Lenovo took inspiration from Samsung with the Precision Pen 3’s magnetic case. is not used. The accessory itself has a cylindrical shape, a physical function button, and a spring-loaded tip that supports 4,096 pressure levels. In terms of sensitivity, the Precision Pen 3 rivals Samsung’s S Pen.

To write with the stylus, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro has a nice screen. It’s a 12.6-inch OLED panel that refreshes at 120Hz, but it’s also surrounded by thin, rounded edges. This combination makes the tablet feel smaller than the numbers suggest. If you place it next to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 or S8 Plus, you’ll probably need an extra second or two to discern which is the Lenovo.

Thanks to its OLED panel, the Tab P12 Pro offers accurate color images compatible with Dolby Vision technology, which makes it perfect for streaming and gaming. The tablet is able to accurately manage the outdoor display with its maximum brightness of 600 nits. While not quite as bright as the iPad Pro’s 1,000 nits, Lenovo’s tablet performs very well – and the screen only gets better when used indoors.

Notable performance

In terms of day-to-day performance, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro holds up well against the competition. It owes it in part to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 processor. While this chipset isn’t Qualcomm’s best, it’s powerful and efficient enough to run graphics-intensive games, edit video at 1080p/60fps, and run multiple apps at once. Available in 6GB and 8GB RAM configurations, the Tab P12 Pro is able to transition between apps gracefully, while keeping the old ones running in the background. It’s rare that an app needs to be restarted when opened after a while.

These performance gains paint a picture we often see with flagship Android tablets. Although they are capable of running mobile apps and games, the overall experience is weakened by the operating system used. The Tab P12 Pro works with Lenovo’s version of Android 11. Thanks to its 12.6-inch screen, the Lenovo tablet gives pride of place to the consumption of applications in split-screen mode. Still, not all apps are compatible with this feature, which makes the tablet experience somewhat limited.

To remedy this, you can use Productivity Mode, Lenov’s tablet-to-desktop toggle, which presents apps in dedicated pop-up windows with a taskbar at the bottom for navigation. Like Samsung DeX, productivity mode can be activated via the notification panel or the shortcut on the optional keyboard accessory. However, unlike Samsung’s tablet-to-desktop approach, which changes the orientation of the home screen, Lenovo’s just adds a taskbar and leaves it at that. Unless you’re certain you need pop-ups, this visual indifference may not be the best incentive for the average consumer to switch modes.

An excellent tablet despite some flaws

The sound quality of the JBL speakers of the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is very good. The four grilles extend across the sides of the tablet and support Dolby Atmos for immersive sound. However, the sound can become skimpy when the volume is set above 65% and the speakers are easy to muffle when held in a landscape position. That’s not a problem when watching shows on media, but for mobile gaming or portable use, you’ll unknowingly find yourself covering the speakers half the time.

The 10,200 mAh battery of the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is similar to that of large tablets from Apple and Samsung. On average, you’ll get about two days of use before you need to recharge your device with the included 30W adapter. And for faster speeds, you can plug the device into a 45W brick to take advantage of its Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 technology. Two-day battery life is to be expected for a tablet that runs on such a large screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.

All in all, as a standalone tablet, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is competitively priced and a great entertainment device. Its large 12.6-inch screen is of excellent quality, and the presence of the Precision Pen 3 stylus will prove to be a major asset for those who need it. There remains a multitude of small defects which spoil the general invoice of a tablet which should however please the greatest number… at least until the arrival of the official version of Android 12L.
