Lenovo’s folding notebook: First impression of the ThinkPad X1 Fold

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is not Lenovo’s first notebook with a foldable display – the manufacturer released a device with the same name back in 2020. However, the new X1 Fold has gotten a whole lot bigger. Because the OLED display has grown from 13.3 inches to 16.3 inches when unfolded (4:3 format).

When closed, the display is about 12 inches in size. The resolution is 2,560 x 2,024 pixels. The display can be operated with a finger or a stylus. It is interesting that the display can be operated either over the entire width or in split-screen mode.

Also noticeable at first glance: The notebook has become a whole corner thinner than the first X1 Fold and is around 8.6 millimeters thick when unfolded.

The keyboard is either placed in front of the display or magnetically clipped to the lower half of the display, turning the device into a handy notebook. For transport, the display stand and keyboard are magnetically attached to the bottom of the folded display. The waste heat is dissipated with heat pipes, the notebook does not have fans.

Technically, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold offers, depending on the configuration, an i5 or i7 of the 12th generation with an Iris Xe graphics unit as well as up to 1 TB of SSD storage and 32 GB of RAM.

Our initial assessment

With all accessories, i.e. stand and keyboard, the fold weighs around 1.9 kilograms and feels solid in the hand. The workmanship and feel is great at first glance – the ThinkPad X1 Fold looks excellent.

However, it takes some getting used to putting a keyboard on the display if you want to use it as a notebook. In addition, we still have slight doubts as to whether the purely magnetic attachment of the display, stand and keyboard is really really safe in everyday work.

Depending on the equipment, the RRP is around 3,000 euros. Release date should be Q4 2022.
