We are in 1915. The First World War has started for a year, and the men have been requisitioned to go to the front. At the Paridier farm, in the center of France, the women are now in charge. Hortense Sandrail tries as best she can to run the farm and maintain the property. To help her in this complicated task, she can count on the support of his daughter Solange, but also needs extra arms. Hortense thus engages Francineof the Public Assistance, who does not guess that a terrible injustice awaits her…

In order to best transcribe his ideas, the filmmaker chose to shoot the film in the town of Montrol-Sénard in the Haute-Vienne department, in the New Aquitaine region. A village that was an ideal setting for shooting a period film. The 1905 telefilm team had already settled there in 2005.
A brilliant debutante in the casting
And in order to sublimate his scenario, Xavier Beauvois has chosen to call on Nathalie Baye and Laura Smet, who play Hortense Sandrail and her daughter Solange respectively. But alongside her two great actresses, we also find the young Iris Bry, in the role of Francine, and who had never set foot on a film set until now. It is also by the greatest chance that the casting director of the film met Iris Bry at the exit of a bookstore. After arresting her, she asked if she would be okay with having a tryout. “It was played a few seconds: a little earlier, a little later, the meeting would never have taken place, and Iris, this miracle, would never have made a movie!”had confided Xavier Beauvois.
