“Les Meutes”, a life of dogs in Casablanca

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – NOT TO BE MISSED

The curtain opens on the nocturnal scene, sordid at will, of a Casablanca not claimed by the tourist office. Scum atmosphere and dog fights, blood, drool, violence, social misery. The ground is vague, the faces devastated, the gaping mouths, the hard-pressed catches. A hound is left for dead. Its owner, collapsed, protests, denounces a rigged fight, and is beaten by one of the henchmen of the owner of the winning dog, small leader of a gang of traffickers who reigns terror in the neighborhood. The owner of the slaughtered dog is a beard as dry as a cudgel, a ponytail, a thread of beard. His name is Dib and, without anyone knowing it yet, the time for his revenge has just come.

Cut connection, in the early morning, on two new protagonists. Issam, a young handler who tries to survive in odd jobs, and Hassan, his father, ex-con and henchman, available for twisted tricks that arise. Exactly, Hassan comes to get Issam for what he calls ” a good hit “a kind of ” little job “. Time to deliver a few low pieces of barbaque to her old mother – the matriarch says that “everything is eaten” and we are thus aware of a society that no longer has enough to eat – and they are on their way. In an exhausted jew’s harp provided by a third, toothless thief, who ordered them to “remain men”.

Tandem of rare intensity

The objurgation will return throughout the film, adding to the misery observed by the state of the meat the very difficult imperative of human dignity. We hold in this tension one of the bass lines of the film, to which is added, of course, that of the relationship, oddly reversed, between the son, internalized and rational, and the father, shattered and histrionesque. Both actors, like the rest of the cast, are non-professionals. The tandem, in the company of which we will spend most of the time, reveals a rare intensity, served by a feverish shooting, a coarse-grained image, lit by the light of dipped headlights in the moral night that is setting in.

We take it back when their occupation for the day arrives. The home of a guy they sausage neatly, hooded with hessian and fit with great difficulty into the tiny trunk of the car. It must be said that it is a big piece, in which we will have had time to recognize the member of the gang who beat up Dib at the beginning of the film. From what we know we are finally embarked on a revenge movie, that Kamal Lazraq, its author, will bend, without giving up on it, towards macabre farce. The two nickel-plated feet have indeed bent the guy so well that they pull a corpse out of the trunk when handing it over to Dib.
