Study: No Covid is best for business

In the fight against the coronavirus, the no-covid strategy is the best protection for human life – and the economy. New study data from France show that the economic damage in countries with such a concept is significantly less than in Germany, for example.

No-Covid strategies put a strain on the economy, according to one study from France less powerful than strategies that only try to contain the coronavirus to a certain incidence. This is what scientists Cécile Philippe and Nicolas Marques from the Institut Économique Molinari in Paris found out in a large-scale study of 13 countries and 82 million people.

Accordingly, it is not at the expense of the economy if the government pursues the goal of completely eradicating the corona virus, but – on the contrary – even benefits it. The economic damage suffered by countries that are merely trying not to overload the health system is almost three times higher than in those states that pursue no-Covid strategies.

The “countries that pursue a zero-covid strategy come out best,” said the scientists. The term Zero Covid used in the study corresponds more to what is understood by No Covid in Germany. “These countries have significantly fewer deaths, their economies are developing better, and their citizens are less constrained,” the study says.

“No Covid creates security”

Philippe and Marques compared the Corona concept, health data, mobility and economies of no-Covid countries such as Australia, New Zealand and South Korea with the ten largest economies, including France, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. The results show a clear difference: In the three no-covid countries, economic output fell by only around one to three percent in 2020. In Germany, however, by 5 percent, in France by as much as 8 percent.

At the same time, the death rate in Australia and South Korea was around 35 deaths per million inhabitants – in New Zealand it was only five deaths per million inhabitants. In comparison: in Germany the rate was 400 and in France 1000 corona deaths per million inhabitants. Both are examples of countries that are pursuing the containment strategy.

The psychological effect of the no-Covid strategies plays a major role in the positive effects, according to the study. “Where the elimination strategy is implemented, the end of the tunnel becomes predictable.” This creates security and makes it possible to make reliable long-term plans. In the end, this leads to stronger economic performance and lower mortality.
