First international guest of Star Academy this Saturday, October 22, Lewis Capaldi suffers from a disabling syndrome. The singer had mentioned it with sincerity on Instagram.
Lewis Capaldi is Britain’s newest singing star. Since the publication of his tube Someone you loved, the Scottish singer multiplies critical and popular successes. This Saturday, October 22, he will be present on the Star Academy set for the second bonus of this new season. On TF1 as during all his performances, the young man will have to deal with this rare and very disabling syndrome which he suffers from. In a live Instagram a few months ago indeed, Lewis Capaldi revealed suffered from Tourette syndrome. This “neuropsychiatric disease with a genetic component is characterized by involuntary, sudden, brief and intermittent tics, resulting in movements (motor tics) or vocalizations”, as recalled by the Brain Institute.
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome affects approximately one in 2,000 people in France and more often boys than girls. “I have the Tourette, I always had it, apparently, confided Lewis Capaldi on social networks. When I watch my interviews from 2018, I see that I do.” Because of this illness, the young man sometimes has trouble holding back sudden gestures. “I do a lot of shoulder twitching. And you see under every TikTok and everything, people are like, ‘why is he twitching?’ he continued, assuring that he was happy with people’s curiosity. Do you think before I play in front of 20,000 people, as an anxious person, I’m going to take a big line of cocaine? That will never happen.”

To try to contain his shoulder contractions, Lewis Capaldi receives Botox injections. “It’s a new technique, I didn’t really learn much about it. They put Botox on my shoulder to keep it from moving. It worked a bit”, told the young singer. If he wanted to talk about his syndrome with sincerity, it is above all so that people do not get the wrong idea about him. “I wanted to talk about it because I didn’t want people to think I was doing cocaine or anything like that”, continued the interpreter of Someone you loved, always during his live Instagram. Its symptoms occur mainly when it is “excited, happy, nervous or stressed” : “I learned to live with it”.
“Some days it’s more painful than others, sometimes it’s quite uncomfortable, but I guess that’s it”, added Lewis Capaldi, who learned to live with this syndrome. He then confided that he was relieved when the doctors made this diagnosis: “I thought I had a horrible degenerative disease, so I prefer the Tourette”. Like him, Billie Eilish also revealed to be suffering from Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. “There are things you’ll never notice if you just have a conversation with me. But for me, it’s really exhausting, explained the singer to the BBC. The most common way people react is to laugh because they think I’m trying to be funny. I still feel incredibly hurt by that.”
