Lewis Hamilton: With the seventh title he draws level with Michael Schumacher

Lewis Hamilton has won his seventh Formula 1 title. Now he's on the same page as the previous record world champion Michael Schumacher

Lewis Hamilton (35) made Formula 1 history after winning the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul. In the fourth last race of the season, the 35-year-old secured his seventh World Championship title ahead of schedule and is thus on a par with the previous record world champion Michael Schumacher (51).

During the interview with the winners after the race, a visibly touched Hamilton fought back tears in front of the cameras: "I'm so incredibly proud of these seven titles, I have to let that sink in first," said the Formula 1 driver. In his "wildest dreams" he could not have imagined winning seven titles.

Challenging season is behind him

Hamilton later thanked his family, friends, team and fans via Twitter in several posts: "I am infinitely grateful for your unconditional love, the many sacrifices you have made and the support," wrote Hamilton in a first tweet.

"Many thanks to my closest friends for making this challenging season more bearable by continually encouraging me. Thank you, this year would have been so much more difficult without you," said Hamilton in another tweet.
