Lexus LBX: a hybrid and luxurious SUV, cousin of the Yaris Cross

Stripped a few weeks ago, here it is revealed. Lexus has unveiled its new “self-charging” hybrid urban SUV, the LBX. Developed mainly for Europe and based on the common Toyota TNGA platform, the new LBX is the entry-level Lexus model and is equipped with the latest hybrid engine developing 136 hp.

Acceleration remains modest with a small 9.2 s to reach 0 to 100 km / h, but versatility should be in order since the LBX could be able to receive the E-Four All-wheel Drive for all-wheel drive . What to be comfortable on slippery terrain and country roads, knowing that competition is almost non-existent in this segment.

The Lexus LBX (for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover) intends to break the traditional strategy of building ranges in order to give owners more freedom to express their individual taste. The LBX will be offered in four “atmospheres”, in addition to the entry-level model with different themes, refined, dynamic or sporty, through design details, colors, textures and finishes.

Lexus set out to create a less formal design. One of the most striking elements of the LBX’s design is its redesigned front end, which breaks away from Lexus’ signature tapered grille of recent years, signaling the start of a new era for the brand. The grille has been unified into a single trapezoidal shape, positioned under a narrow opening that runs under the leading edge of the bonnet, connecting thin headlamp clusters. The design of the headlights offers a new visual signature, with the daytime running lights and indicators integrated into the same dual-function optical units.

Lexus hides the base of the Yaris Cross well, because no body panel is common to the latter. The Lexus LBX is 4.19m long, 1.82m wide and 1.54m high, with a wheelbase of 2.58m. The trunk volume is a little more generous with 332 l against 320 l for Toyota. It is a little worse than the Renault Capture or the Peugeot 2008 that it will have to face and which display 434 and 422 l.

The LBx will however be able to count on a driving position incorporating the codes of the Tazuna concept, which allow a perfect layout of the controls and offer exemplary ergonomics. You just have to make small gestures to access the controls and keep your eyes on the road. The driving interface includes a unique 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 9.8-inch central touchscreen, which incorporates the latest generation of the Lexus Link Connect system with connected navigation, OTA remote update, the CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as access to the vehicle via a digital key connected to the smartphone.
