LG Display will not produce Oled panels for monitors… yet


LG Display would still not be ready to produce Oled panels for computer monitors whose size approaches 30 inches. The company is evaluating the capabilities of its two Oled technologies for mid-size products.

LG Display manufactures Oled and LCD panels for all players in the industry, whether Oled panels for all Oled televisions on the market, p-Oled panels for smartphones, such as the iPhone for example, or more IPS LCD panels for monitors, televisions and the automotive industry. On the other hand, the company is still absent from the Oled monitor market and in general, it does not produce medium-sized Oled panels, between 13 and 32 inches. According to Lee Hyun-hoo, senior vice president of LG Display, speaking at the 2022 Oled Korea conference on April 7, LG Display engineers will evaluate the capabilities of White-Oled (W-OLED) and blue-Oled (RGB) technologies. -OLED) for use as a monitor panel. The two Oled panel technologies would have their advantages and disadvantages, without further details. It is assumed that the White-Oled technology with its additional white sub-pixel benefits from a better lifespan thanks to the presence of four sub-pixels, compared to three (red, green and blue) for the classic RGB-Oled. The latter offers a better resolution (pixels per inch), more advantageous for producing Oled panels for tablets and laptops.

At the end of the conference, Lee Hyun-hoo still dashed all hopes of seeing 30-inch Oled panels by declaring that while LG Display was evaluating the possibilities of producing medium-sized Oled panels, the company currently had neither. plan or production method to manufacture Oled panels for monitors… That’s what is said. In the meantime, LG Display has been offering 42-inch Oled panels since this year, which are still a little smaller than the 48-inch ones from last year. Some manufacturers like Asus have already announced player monitors using this new 42-inch OLED panel. This is the case with the Asus PG42UQ, while other manufacturers are betting mainly on the 48-inch panel, such as LG with the LG UltraGear 48GQ900 OLED or Gigabyte with the Aorus FO48U, already on sale for around €1,500.

Finally, there are many medium-sized OLED monitors such as the Asus ProArt PQ22UC with its 22-inch OLED Ultra HD panel for around €5,000 or the LG UltraFine OLED Pro 32EP950 released in 2021 and sold for around €3,000. These two models have the particularity of using an OLED panel produced by the Japanese company Japan OLED (JOLED), via a printing process. Today, the majority of OLED screens are manufactured using the evaporation deposition process through a metal grid (the mask). This process is reliable, whether for small sizes (smartphones and tablets from Samsung and LG Display) or large sizes of Oled panels (LG Display), but manufacturing by evaporation creates losses of materials on the grid. The inkjet printing manufacturing process offers two advantages: it avoids these material losses and it has no limit in terms of screen size (it will be suitable for small, medium or large screens) . However, this manufacturing process remains for the moment quite confidential and reserved for OLED monitors using medium-sized panels.
