LG OLED 2022: understanding what’s new in the A2, B2, C2, G2 and Z2 series

LG has unveiled its entire range of televisions for 2022. We were interested in the OLED series, here is everything we know about these new TV models.

LG OLED 2022: understanding what's new in the A2, B2, C2, G2 and Z2 series

At first glance, there aren’t any big surprises with LG’s latest TVs. LCDs for the less expensive, several models with QNED technology (MiniLED), and always with OLED which reigns at the top. But precisely, what does this OLED vintage have in store for us? Let’s take a closer look.

LG OLED 2022: understanding what's new in the A2, B2, C2, G2 and Z2 series

First, LG Electronics has provided very little technical detail on its products. They will undoubtedly be communicated later, during the first tests. As you can see above, there are 7 OLED families at LG Electronics. In 2022, we are no longer talking about OLED (x)1, but OLED (x)2. Each family / series is designated by a letter.

The differences between series A2 and B2

These are the cheapest LG OLED TVs, succeeding the A1 and B1. The big novelty of this year is that they take advantage of the processor Alpha 7 Gen 5 (following on from the 2021 Alpha 7 Intelligent Processor Gen 4) with webOS 22. Moreover, note that to differentiate these two families, the A2 products have an image frequency rate that does not exceed 60 Hz with HDMI 2.0 connectors, while the B2 benefit from 100/120 Hz with the gaming modes (VRR, eARC, ALLM, AMD FreeSync) as well as at least one HDMI 2.1 connection with support for 4K / 120 Hz signals. This means that if you have a next-gen game console, like the Xbox Series X or the PS5, it is better to move towards the B2 series.

  • LG A2: 48 inches (LG OLED48A2), 55 inches (LG OLED55A2), 65 inches (LG OLED65A2) and 77 inches (LG OLED77A2);
  • LG B2: 55 inches (LG OLED55B2), 65 inches (LG OLED65B2) and 77 inches (LG OLED77B2).

Finally, the peak of luminosity is more important on the B2 series than on the A2. Based on our research, it would be around 500 nits on the A2 and 600 nits on the B2.

The C2 series benefits from two important innovations

If there is one series that is evolving a lot this year, it is the C2 series. First, she enjoysa new small screen size of 42 inches (approximately 107 centimeters), which may be of interest to gamers looking to complete a next-gen PC / console setup.

What’s more, the C2 series benefits from the Evo panel from last year’s G1 series, except for the 42 and 48 inch diagonals. Indeed, it uses a new OLED Evo panel produced by LG Display offering a higher brightness peak than that of the other OLED panels supplied to LG. This Evo makes it possible to obtain a greater peak of luminosity, it uses an additional green emitter and benefits from better colorimetry.

The C2 series also has the new Alpha 9 Gen 5 AI 4K processor, which is more powerful than the previous one, which is said to improve the management of light levels. Once again, we have very little information on the novelties of this processor dedicated to the image.

Finally, this series benefits from a real weight loss. The weight of the 65-inch version, for example, drops from 32.7 kg (65C1) to 18.1 kg (62C2), or 45% less weight. Note that this weight loss is also valid for the G2 series.

  • LG C2: 42 inches (LG OLED42C2), 48 inches (LG OLED48C2), 55 inches (LG OLED55C2), 65 inches (LG OLED65C2), 77 inches (LG OLED77C2) and 83 inches (LG OLED83C2)

The G2 series would use the OLED EX panel

The main novelty of the G2 series would be even better brightness with Evo with Brightness Booster which uses a cooling system (thermal dissipation) which would allow a peak brightness greater than 1000 nits.

Visually, the edges of the screen are even thinner, 6mm compared to 10.2mm in 2021. In fact, both G and C series sport slim bezels, from 10.2mm to 6mm, while the G2 also removes the 45 degree chamfered edges of the G1 in favor of sharper right angles.

Like its predecessor, the G1, the G2 is very thin and looks like a photo frame, ideal for flush mounting on the wall. It is also compatible with LG’s Gallery easel stand as well as standard stands.

Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro

There is also the Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro mode which allows the brightness to be divided into 5,000 zones to better manage it, thanks to the work of the new Alpha 9 Gen 5 AI 4K processor.

LG Display announced its new OLED EX panel at the end of 2021, the G2 series in would benefit. Again, we have not had confirmation. EX for “Evolution” and “eXperience”, this technology uses deuterium (or heavy hydrogen) supplied by the firm DuPont (specialist in chemistry) instead of hydrogen. Deuterium has the advantage of being more stable and more resistant to heat, which in theory makes it possible to obtain a light peak 30% greater. Additionally, an algorithm can predict the energy needed for each diode based on your viewing habits.

In addition, this series also benefits from two new even larger sizes, 83 inches and 97 inches (or approximately 246 centimeters).

Finally, LG has also specified the arrival of the Always Ready function to display information, the time for example, while controlling the consumption of the TV and probably also the marking problems.

  • LG G2: 55 inches (LG OLED55G2), 65 inches (LG OLED65G2), 77 inches (LG OLED77G2), 83 inches (LG OLED83G2) and 97 inches (LG OLED97G2)

LG WebOS 22

All these series come with the operating system WebOS in version 22 which embeds a wide range of functions, but ultimately few changes on this quarry. The most important is the possibility of create personal profiles, up to six, an option that fans of personalization will appreciate if they have to share their television with other people.

Models with a microphone (Z2, G2, C2, QNED 99 and QNED90) will now be able to respond to LG Assistant voice commands in standby mode, which means you can check the weather forecast without turning on your TV. It is also possible to pair your smartphone to your TV via NFC to share content. As you have seen, there is still no backlight on the LG Magic Remote.

More gaming

It’s fair to say that LG’s OLEDs are already the best gaming TVs available, with HDMI 2.1 connections supporting 4K @ 120Hz, ALLM (automatic low latency mode) and VRR (refresh rate). variable), plus an HGiG and support for Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. Since the end of last year, there has even been native integration of streaming services like Google’s Stadia and GeForce Now.

On the hardware side, LG ensures that the 2022 OLED models will support the “multiple functions” of HDMI 2.1 and there is a change. Last year, LG TVs with HDMI 2.1 had a bandwidth capped at 40 Gbps. LG has increased the bandwidth of the HDMI 2.1 ports of its 2022 OLEDs to 48 Gbps. You may not need it yet, but you can be sure that your LG OLED is at least a little more future-proof.

Game Optimize

From an interface point of view, the menu Game Optimize has been updated. It is simple to use and offers more options.

Let’s not forget the LG Z2 8K

Without LG’s OLED Evo technology, the top model for 2022 remains the series 8K Z2 OLED. The Z2 series runs on a specific version of the Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor, designed to make the most of the increased definition, and it will be available in sizes 77 and 88 inches.

Like the G2, the Z2 has what LG calls a “ Gallery“Which means it is very thin and has a flat back which makes it ideal for wall mounting. Unlike the G2, which only comes with a wall mount, the 88-inch Z2 comes with a floor mount, and the 77-inch model appears to include both feet and a built-in recessed wall mount.
