Finally ! LG Electronics unveils webOS Re:New… and it looks very interesting.

LG dropped a little bombshell in the middle of its latest press release: it is not about its latest QNED 2024 range unveiled at CES 2024, but rather news that affects webOS. For those who don’t know, webOS is the system that runs LG Smart TVs, a bit like Tizen for Samsung or Google TV for other brands (Sony, Philips, etc.).

Until recently, getting an LG TV meant sticking to the TV’s generation version of webOS. Certainly, some minor software updates could occur, offering optimizations or adding new advertisements (yes…), but you never had access to the new major versions of webOS. This seemed to be a limitation, often justified by performance concerns.

However, LG is taking a new turn with the webOS Re:New program. The latter promises updates to the latest version of webOS for an extended period, encompassing the most recent models and certain 2022 models (the QNED 8K). In short, your 2024 LG TV could be up to date until 2028, potentially improving the user experience and extending the lifespan of the device. Moreover, webOS 24 includes good news: Chromecast is finally coming to LG TVs.

This is a significant step for LG which, by adopting such a strategy, makes its televisions not only more attractive, but also more durable. You will therefore be able to take advantage of new technologies, when possible, without having to change your television. It remains to be seen whether LG extends this initiative to all of its ranges, including OLEDs, so that as many people as possible can benefit from this progress.
