LHYFE: First in the United Kingdom: Lhyfe and Centrica wish to develop offshore renewable green hydrogen – 03/20/2023 at 07:30

  • This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will pave the way for a pilot site for the production of green hydrogen at sea

  • The two partners are also considering a large-scale partnership to achieve the “zero emissions” objective.

  • Objective: to make the United Kingdom a world leader in the hydrogen sector

Nantes (France) and Windsor (United Kingdom), March 20, 2023 – 7:30 a.m. –

Lhyfe (EURONEXT: LHYFE) and Centrica have agreed to jointly develop offshore renewable green hydrogen in the UK, a first for this country. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that could accelerate the development of green hydrogen as part of the country’s energy transition.

As part of this agreement, Lhyfe and Centrica will study the possibility of combining their expertise in order to collaborate on a pilot site for the production of green hydrogen in the southern North Sea.

The pilot project will aim to combine Lhyfe’s expertise in renewable green hydrogen production with Centrica’s experience in gas storage and infrastructure, to ensure that the hydrogen produced can be stored and used. safely in the UK. The end result would prove that an end-to-end hydrogen production, storage and distribution system is possible in the country.

The two companies will also explore the possibility of an additional partnership to deploy the technology on a larger scale alongside offshore wind power generation.

Renewable green hydrogen associated with offshore wind is set to play an increasingly important role in the UK’s energy mix, due to the rapid expansion expected over the next decade in both areas.

Colin Brown, Head of UK & Ireland at Lhyfe, says:

“We are pleased to announce this agreement with Centrica. It represents an exciting opportunity to advance the transition to clean energy through offshore, large-scale production of renewable green hydrogen. Offshore electrolysis combined with hydrogen storage will maximize the huge potential of offshore wind in the UK. The country can become a world leader in the production of renewable green hydrogen, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and improving its national energy security, while producing net zero energy stimulating local economies”.

Martin Scargill, CEO of Centrica Storage, comments:

“We are delighted to be working with our partner Lhyfe on an exciting new and world-class hydrogen project. Hydrogen will play a key role in decarbonising the UK’s power supply by 2035, and our long-term ambition is for Rough – our gas storage site – to become the world’s largest gas storage site. hydrogen in the world, with up to 16TWh of storage capacity. This pilot project will show how green hydrogen can be produced, transported and stored on the UK market, while helping the UK to achieve zero emissions. »

The UK government has doubled its target for low-carbon hydrogen production from 5 GW to 10 GW by 2030, at least half of which will come from green hydrogen. Hydrogen production is expected to initially support the decarbonization of industrial hubs, such as the Humber Hub, while other use cases will grow as the hydrogen economy grows.

A recent report by the Climate Change Committee has confirmed the essential role of hydrogen production, storage and use in achieving the goal of a net zero electricity system in the UK United by 2035.
