After five rounds of voting in a fortnight by members of the Conservative Party, the British will know their new Prime Minister on Monday. Ultra-liberal, embodying firmness against Vladimir Putin and a big favorite in the polls, the current Foreign Minister Liz Truss should become the new resident of 10 Downing Street.

Will the new British Prime Minister be a new Prime Minister? A few hours before the revelation of the results of the votes of the 160,000 militants of the Conservative Party, Liz Truss, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, is given as the winner in the polls. Facing her, Rishi Sunak, former Minister of Finance, fought a fierce fight during the internal campaign. Insufficient, however, as underlined by a YouGov survey of July 21, where 62% of party members questioned said they were ready to support Liz Truzz, against only 38% for the former Minister of Finance.

Intransigence

Born into a committed Labor family and after a brief stint with the Centrists, Liz Truss now represents the right wing of the Conservative Party. Ultra-liberal, the one who advocated “Remain” a few years ago during Brexit has become a fervent defender of the latter and is one of Boris Johnson’s most loyal allies.

Follower of Instagram, the Minister of Foreign Affairs likes to put herself on stage and embodied during her mandate, firmness vis-à-vis Vladimir Putin and intransigence vis-à-vis Europe. Liz Truss did not hesitate to propose a law to modify the Brexit agreement on the Northern Irish protocol, a particularly sensitive point between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

“Unrealistic” economic proposals

After studying at Oxford and a career in financial management, Liz Truss was elected to the House of Commons in 2010. And two years later, David Cameron, Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016, propelled her by appointing her to his government. From then on, she will no longer leave the mysteries of power and will chain the posts of ministers under Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

If she remains the favorite of conservative activists, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is not unanimous among her colleagues. His detractors reproach him in particular for a lack of conviction and charisma or his proposals on the economy, considered unrealistic by part of his clan.
