Lidl is changing how we pay at the checkout


Along with Aldi, Lidl is one of the most popular discounters in Germany. Despite many new technologies, nothing has changed at the cash registers. But now Lidl is also jumping on a trend that we already know from other retailers. Self-checkout stations will be set up.

Lidl is building self-service checkouts

It was only a matter of time before discounters discovered self-service checkouts. You already know the self-checkout stations from “premium” retailers like Rewe, Kaufland and Co. But hardware stores like Hornbach or furniture retailers like Ikea have also been using them for years. Now Lidl has also started Set up self-service checkouts in the first branches (Source: Lebensmittelzeitung).

Anyone who shops at Lidl in the future will have the option of choosing between the normal checkout and a self-service checkout. In order to be able to pay for your purchase at a self-checkout station, you have to scan each item and place it on a scaleto compare the weight to the type of item. The fruit must then also be weighed on the scales and selected on a touchscreen. In the future, the Lidl Plus app will also play a more important role by enabling self-scanning via smartphone. However, this is currently not possible.

Self-service checkouts are not always an advantage

If the purchase is small, then self-checkouts are a great advantage. You scan a few things, put them on the scales, you can pay quickly by cell phone or card and there is usually no queue. However, if the purchase is very large, it is still worth going to the classic checkout, because there the article is usually scanned much faster by the employees. There is also no need for a control scan, since the employees can see the items.
