Lidl launches its own electric car to compete with the Citroën Ami


The German supermarket chain Lidl is looking to expand into a new segment, electric cars. The giant will soon market electric cars under the Elaris brand, and a first model has already been announced.

After the Nissan Leaf, which sold out in the blink of an eye, the Lidl discounter has been offering a new electric car for a few days now in certain markets: Elaris Finn. It is a small two-seater electric vehicle with a length of 2.8m made in China, and marketed locally since 2019.

The Elaris Finn, which looks a lot like a Smart, is now available from our German neighbors for a monthly subscription. However, it will also be possible to buy it in the traditional way.

What technical characteristics for the Elaris Finn?

According to information from Lidl, the electric motor of its Elaris Finn has a power of 48 hp, can reach a maximum speed of 115 km/h and weighs only 930 kg. The technical specifications specify that a normal driver’s license is required to drive the Elaris Finn, because it does not fall into the category of microcars like the famous Citroën Ami.

On the autonomy side, the car uses a 32 kWh battery providing a range of 200 km. It can be recharged to 30kW to 100% in an hour when the battery is empty, and it takes nearly 5 hours to go from 5% to 100% on a regular household outlet.

Inside the cabin, you can find a large 12.3 inch touch screen diagonally in the center of the dashboard. There is also another high-definition screen behind the wheel that will display driving information, and the car offers LED lights and air conditioning.

Regarding availability, the car is already available in Germany for 222 euros per month for one year via the “Like2Drive” provider. The subscription also includes an option adding kilometers if you plan to exceed the 10,000 km offered. You also have the possibility of buying it directly at a price of €20,330much more than the Citroën Ami that we were able to test.
