Lies of P: change to avoid controversy

Round8 Studio And Neowiz Games will launch in a few days Lies of Pan action role-playing game that can be summed up as “Bloodborne with Pinocchio in the Belle Époque”. A title which promises an atypical atmosphere with puppets to face thanks to a varied arsenal, and the developers want to avoid making waves.

Two years ago, a teaser of gameplay of the alpha version of Lies of P showed an inanimate puppet, hanging from a bridge with an “APAB” sign around its neck. An acronym obviously in reference to “ACAB”, popularized in the 1980s in the United Kingdom and denouncing police excesses. A strong and extremely political message, still relevant today, but which has been modified in the game. In a recent extract from gameplay shared by Solear Gaming, the puppet is still there but with a sign saying “Purge Puppets”or “Purge the puppets” in French.

A change that did not go unnoticed by fans, Video Games spoke with Ji-Won Choi, director of Lies of Pto return in particular to this sign story. “APAB” thus meant “All Puppets Are Bastards”, but the developers preferred to remove this political reference.

This was one of the messages we were going to use in the game, but we ended up removing it. We ultimately removed it because we wanted everyone to enjoy the game exactly how we wanted and without judging it based on any trends. We really wanted the world we designed to be interpreted by players exactly the way we wanted, so we eliminated factors that might be a little risky.

We respect everyone who would want to play this game and we wanted everyone to get the best experience from it.

Lies of P APAB ACAB2

The developers remain wise to avoid any controversies, at least, players will be able to fully enjoy Lies of P without political distraction, even members of the police. The game’s release date is set for September 19, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, you can pre-order it at €59.99 on Amazon.
