Comedian, actor then screenwriter and director, Dany Boon is a real jack-of-all-trades. In 2005, he took his first steps behind the camera by adapting to the cinema “Construction site life“, a successful play he wrote and directed in 2003. He thus made Michèle Laroque, Daniel Prévost and Zinedine Soualem guests of his Maison du bonheur. The film attracted more than 1.1 million spectators in theaters.
Three years later, the director created a surprise with the comedy Welcome to the Ch’tis. With its 20 million admissions, the film became the biggest French success of all time.

1 – Welcome to the ch’tis (2008) – 3.1/5
Not surprisingly, Welcome to the Ch’tis ranks first in the ranking. In this comedy Philippe (Kad Merad), the director of the Salon-de-Provence post office is transferred to Bergues, a small town in the North. For this southerner full of prejudices, the North is horror. But to his great surprise, he discovers a charming place and welcoming people, especially Antoine (Dany Boon), the village postman.
For his second production, Dany Boon wanted to free himself from the clichés associated with the North of France and show a welcoming face of this region. He specified at the time that the idea of the film started from the vision of those who do not know the Nord-Pas de Calais. “These French people who have a very negative and terrible vision of the region, whether on poverty, despair, unemployment or mines. Hence the desire to make a very human comedy, whose main character, not being from the North, will discover the ch’timi culture, the sense of welcome, of sharing…”

And the bet is successful since the feature film worn by Dany Boon, Kad Merad, Line Renaud, Michel Galabru, Zoé Félix, Anne Marivin and Guy Lecluyse is a real success. Released in February 2008, Bienvenue Chez les Cht’is totaled more than 20 million admissions and became the biggest national box office success for a French film (and it still is to this day!). It is the first film to exceed La Grande Vadrouille by Gérard Oury (1966) and its 17.3 million spectators at the French box office.
The film popularized ch’timis expressions such as “biloute” and the town of Bergues, where it was shot, experienced a real tourist boom. A circuit called the “Ch’ti touré” was even organized and took fans to the filming locations.
This comedy was entitled to an Italian remake Benvenuti al Sud and an X parody version entitled Welcome to the Ch’tites coquines…
2 – The Little Family (2018) – 2.7/5
So we continue with the Ch’tis! 10 years after the success of Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis and after having directed 3 other feature films, Dany Boon returns to the north in La Ch’tite famille.
In this comedy, Boon plays Valentin, a Parisian architect married to Constance (Laurence Arné), also an architect. They are preparing the opening of their retrospective at the Palais de Tokyo. But what no one knows is that in order to fit into the world of Parisian design and luxury, Valentin lied about his proletarian and ch’tis origins. So, when his family arrives by surprise on the day of the opening, the meeting of the two worlds is shattering. Especially since Valentin, following an accident, will lose his memory and find himself 20 years back, more ch’ti than ever!

The Ch’tite Family
Although Line Renaud And Guy Lecluyse are in the casting, The Ch’tite family is not the sequel to Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, but nevertheless takes up its codes and in particular the “shock of cultures”.
Released in February 2018, the film is a success and brings 5.626 million spectators to theaters. It is the third film of the year to have exceeded one million spectators in France behind Les Tuche 3 (5.687 million admissions) and Les Incredibles 2 (5.845 million spectators).
3 – Crazy RAID (2016) 2.5/5
A year before La Ch’tite famille, Dany Boon unveiled his action comedy RAID Dingue. Also worn by Alice Pol, Michel Blanc and Yvan Attal, the film centers on Johanna (Pol), a distracted and clumsy policewoman who dreams of becoming the first woman to join the elite group of RAID.
Accepted at the training center for obscure and political reasons, she then finds herself in the hands of agent Eugène Froissard (known as Poissard) (Boon), the most misogynistic of the RAID agents. This improbable duo is tasked with stopping the fearsome Leopard Gang, responsible for major robberies in the streets of the capital.
The film marks the filmmaker’s third collaboration with Alice Pol after A Perfect Plan (2012) and Supercondriaque (2014).

A film for which Dany Boon was coached by stuntman and fight choreographer Alain Figlarz and for which the actor underwent intensive training based on bodybuilding, shooting and climbing, while eating a lot of egg whites , Grisons meat or 0% fromage blanc. “So I started modestly with 20 push-ups a day and by the end, I was doing over 200! I lost 15 kilos to regain 10 of muscles…”, Boon remembers.
Released in February 2017, the film accumulated 4.572 million spectators and once again placed third on the podium of films released in 2017 having exceeded one million spectators.
RAID Dingue is behind Despicable Me 3 and its 5.637 million viewers and Star Wars, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, which has more than 7 million admissions in France.
