Life hack: Why the coffee grounds are too good to throw away

Coffee not only tastes good, but is also a real all-rounder. The coffee grounds are good for plants, furniture and the body.

For many Germans, a fresh coffee in the morning is simply a part of it. When the wake-up agent is finished, the filter and coffee grounds usually end up in the trash can. The black powder is a real all-rounder. Whether as a fertilizer for the plants or as a nourishing peeling – coffee grounds can be used in many ways.

Remove annoying smells

Coffee grounds neutralize unpleasant smells. For example, if the cheese has been in the fridge for a little too long, simply place a bowl of coffee grounds in it overnight. The next morning there is nothing left of the strong smell. If your hands smell unpleasant after cutting onions, coffee grounds can work wonders. Simply rub your hands with the powder. Coffee grounds are even effective against stinking shoes: sprinkle them in the shoes, leave them on overnight and shake them out the next day. The smell of sweat is already a thing of the past.

The beauty boost for skin and hair

Coffee grounds are also suitable for peeling. Mix the powder with coconut oil. The particles act like a grindstone and leave the skin feeling silky. Are the hair dull and weak? Then a hair treatment is just the thing! To do this, pour hot water over the coffee grounds, let them steep and gently massage in the dark brown liquid. Then leave it on for a few minutes. The result: strong and shiny hair.

For beautiful plants

Coffee grounds are also a natural fertilizer. The reason: it is rich in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. These substances can also be found in fertilizers from the hardware store. It is important that the coffee grounds are dried beforehand. Otherwise there is a risk of mold. It is best to spread them out on a plate and let them air dry. If you want to fertilize houseplants, you can simply dissolve the coffee grounds in the water and water the plants. Half a cup a week is usually enough.

For potted plants, it is best to mix the coffee grounds with the potting soil. This provides the roots with nutrients. One advantage of natural fertilizers: coffee grounds repel pests. To make ants flee, just build a small wall of coffee grounds around the plants. The coffee neutralizes the scent traces that the little crawling animals lay for orientation. Even snails can be driven off with it. The reptiles are sensitive to the ground beans. The caffeine acts like a neurotoxin for them.

Get rid of dirt

Cleaning up the dirty grill grate is a chore. But with the help of coffee grounds and a sponge, you can deal with stubborn dirt. Thanks to its granular structure, the coffee acts like an abrasive. Simply rub the grate with the coffee grounds and then scrub vigorously with a sponge. Finally rinse with water – done!

Ade scratch

Wooden furniture is often prone to scratches. Coffee grounds can help repair the signs of wear. Everything you need for it: a cotton swab, oil and coffee grounds. Dip the cotton swab in both and rub the scratch with it. The dark color of the coffee colors the damaged area and the oil closes the surface. The trick only works with dark wood.
