The fresh condition of cut flowers is usually short-lived. These tricks will ensure that they stay fresh longer.

Whether as a birthday present or an Easter arrangement: cut flowers make every room look fresh and lively. In order to have something from your bouquet for a long time, however, some care measures are required. These tips will help.

The basics

It is not without reason that most flower shops wrap their bouquets in paper, this protects the plant from the weather. When you get home, the size of the vase is crucial. The container should be clean, with enough space for all of the stems, and the leaves should not hang in the water. A tip: Simply pluck off deep-seated leaves, it won’t harm the flower.

Cut properly

Knives are better suited for cutting than scissors because the latter squeeze the handle. The cutting itself ensures that the plant can better absorb the water and nutrients. Secateurs are sharper than normal scissors and can also be used.

Use nutrients

When you buy a rose, you often get the right nutrient powder right away. In general, there are nutrients for cut flowers in solid and liquid state. If you do not have a nutrient solution in your household, you should still not use sugar. This accelerates the growth of bacteria.

Water on!

The water should be at room temperature. Depending on the variety, however, the flowers require different amounts of liquid. Here it depends on the hardness of the handle. The rule is: the harder the handle, the more water. Incidentally, it should be replaced every two to three days – regardless of the type of flower.
