Life is Strange: Double Exposure, 18 minutes of gameplay and new details introduced by the developers

Last Sunday, on the occasion of Xbox Games Showcase 2024, Square Enix And Deck Nine Games revealed Life is Strange: Double Exposurea sixth in this universe initiated by DON’T NOD in 2015 who will make us follow again Max Caulfieldthe heroine of the first game. This time, she will investigate the impossible murder of her friend Safi and discover that she can travel between two realities, including one where the latter is still alive. This Thursday evening, a livestream was broadcast to present this adventure to us in more detail. If you only want to see the gameplayit is still 18 minutes which can be viewed below (with the English dubbing).

First interesting detail that we learn during the interview between Elyse Willems, game director Jonathan Stauder and narrative director Felice Kuan, it is specified that the developers wanted to respect the two endings of the first Life is Strangeshowing a photo of Chloe. Hannah Telle therefore resumed her role as Max Caulfield, resident photographer and artist in Caledon, Vermont, a place that serves as a fresh start for her to move away from her past. The plot will take place during the winter as the holidays approach. Just seconds after seeing on the phone her best friend Safiperformed by Olivia Abiassi, she will therefore find her dead in the snow even though there are no footprints or weapons around. She will then discover a new power and attempt to prevent the crime from happening in the parallel reality where she can travelwhile having to manage two different versions of each character, like Moses played by Blu Allen. The latter is the best friend of Safi and an astrophysicist.

We can therefore explore the campus in these two realities in the style of a supernatural thriller rich in twists and turns, where our choices will have an impact. A police inspector, however, will have heroin in his sights. If Max is the only one who can foil this murder, it’s quite simply because she can talk to the victim. On the other hand, she no longer has her rewind power because of the trauma it caused her…but therefore has this new version that she will have to learn to control. Suffice to say that creating a new character would probably not have changed much and would have seemed more coherent at first glance, even if she will ask questions on this subject. There is no need to have played the other games to understand the story. However, the two endings of the first game will be respected through interactions and visual elements. Since players no longer necessarily have their backups from the time, there will soon be a conversation aroundArcadia Bay where it will then be possible to redo all the important choices linked to it.

We knew it had to be out of this world. And that we also had to respect the two unforgettable endings of the first part of Max’s story, while creating a new chapter. A new story that would take up and recognize Max’s past suffering, while making her evolve as a person. Which would welcome newbies from the start, and offer fans an unexpected story. —Felice Kuan

Stake, the perception of Max will show her the places where the veil between realities is weak, where she can cross. In these moments, she will have glimpses of people and objects on the other side, displayed as holograms. She will then be able to open a portal and find her way there. Changes in the environment will be there to tell us what reality we are in, with variations on the principle of the butterfly effect following the death of Safi.

Max’s powers evolved with her. She hadn’t used them for a long time because of their devastating effects. They have atrophied and changed. She has the supernatural ability to move between worlds, to see the one where Safi is still alive, the one where she died. She is ideally placed to discover the truth about Safi’s tragic death.

The ability to move from one reality to another opens up gameplay possibilities. Thus, Max will alternate between different versions of the same space affected by Safi’s death and his powers will allow him to solve certain puzzles and discover clues otherwise inaccessible. —Hannah Telle

Note that the soundtrack will feature unreleased songs, but also licensed music. Finally, these are therefore 18 minutes of gameplay coming from Chapter 1 which were broadcastfeaturing Max, Safi And Moseswhich can be reviewed in French via the presentation.
