Like every year, the CES was an opportunity for the biggest names in high-tech to present their latest innovations to the world. And if we expected Samsung to present us with the latest version of its S21 (the S21FE, which promises to be one of the great smartphones of 2022), we did not however see The Freestyle coming.

Behind this slightly mysterious name, but in line with products like The Frame, The Serif or The Terrace, hides a video projector with an amazing design. Why ? Quite simply because The Freestyle is a portable device, and as such offers maximum image quality for minimal bulk.

The Freestyle will be available on February 17 for 999 euros. However, it is possible to pre-order it today on Samsung’s online store to get it at 949 euros thanks to the code FREESTYLE.

The Freestyle: the projector that accompanies you everywhere

Unlike the vast majority of projectors on the market, The Freestyle is not made to stay warm in your living room. Its main purpose, and its originality, is that it is a nomadic product, designed from the outset to slip into a bag and be used everywhere.

To accomplish this feat, Samsung has bet on an extremely compact design that makes it easily transportable. Able to hold in one hand, this cylinder of 104.2 by 172.8 mm for 95.2 mm in diameter indeed weighs only 800 grams, which is a great feat given the performance it deploys. Despite its size, The Freestyle is capable of broadcasting an image between 30 and 100 inches (with a recoil oscillating between 80 cm and 2.70 meters), and all in Full HD compatible HDR.

Beyond functioning perfectly indoors once connected to the mains, The Freestyle has been designed to go beyond this framework. How? ‘Or’ What ? Well simply by connecting an external battery with the ad hoc cable. Equipped with a USB-C port, the Samsung projector is indeed compatible with USB-PD type external batteries with a power of 50 W/20 V or more. These batteries are not included in the projector box.

A perfect image in all circumstances

The least we can say is that Samsung has accomplished quite a tour de force with The Freestyle. Although compact, this mobile projector does not skimp on performance and offers a slew of features allowing it to broadcast an excellent image, whatever the conditions in which it is used.

First originality, this video projector is able to turn 180 degrees, which obviously allows you to broadcast your images on a traditional wall, but also on the ceiling. A good way to watch a movie while being comfortably seated under the duvet, for example.

Once installed, The Freestyle can rely on an arsenal of automated processes that take care of adjusting the image according to each situation. Starting with an automatic leveling system that straightens the image even if the projector is placed askew. But that’s not all, because it is also able to restore the parallelism of the image in order to avoid distortions, to adjust the color calibration according to the background on which it projects the image, or even to adjust its focus on the fly to get a sharp image.

A complete and accessible connected experience

To go a step further, Samsung has equipped The Freestyle with many connected features. Via the Tizen platform and the Smart HUB, this projector can access a plethora of video content via Samsung services or compatible applications (Netflix, OCS, Disney+ and others). The presence of a microphone and a 5 W omnidirectional speaker (360 degrees) allows The Freestyle to transform into a personal assistant thanks to Bixby or Alexa. Enough to control your device by voice and get a whole lot of information at will.

Thanks to the SmartThings (Android) or AirPlay 2 (iOS) applications, this video projector can easily connect to your various devices to broadcast your films, photos or more simply, your music. Samsung Galaxy owners running Android 8.1 and above will even be able to take advantage of the Tap View feature to connect to The Freestyle with just a tap. The Samsung ecosystem is also honored since The Freestyle can also connect to certain brand televisions (Q70 and more) to duplicate their display from another room. You had to think about it.

Finally, note that The Freestyle has an Ambiance mode which allows it to project different content onto the walls in order to create… an atmosphere! This will allow you to use it as a projector to diffuse a particular lighting, but also to project patterns (Illuminations or Prism), your own photos or even scenes. This last mode will give you the opportunity, for example, to project a sunset through a window.

Discover The Freestyle pre-order offer

Unveiled a few days ago at CES, The Freestyle will be available on February 17. In the meantime, it is possible to go to the Samsung site to pre-order it to be sure to receive it on D-Day. Better still, Samsung is offering you a discount of 50 euros thanks to the code FREESTYLE, which will allow you to acquire it for 949 euros instead of 999 euros.
