Ligue 1: Seko Fofana voted best African player 2022

Seko Fofana, captain of RC Lens, won the Marc-Vivien Foé prize for the best African player of the 2021-2022 season in Ligue 1 on Monday.

The trophy remains Blood and Gold. The Ivorian international midfielder (27) succeeds a Lensois teammate, the Congolese midfielder Gaël Kakuta, after two previous seasons returned to Lille attackers, the Ivorian Nicolas Pépé in 2019 and the Nigerian Victor Osimhen in 2020.

Author of a very good season in Ligue 1, Seko Fofana this year is ahead of the Malian right side Hamari Traoré and the Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd, two players playing in Rennes.

Starting off on a high, with already three goals in August, the captain of the Sang et Or has been credited with decisive achievements this season, such as against PSG (1-1) in December, Saint-Etienne (2-1) mid -January, Bordeaux (3-2) in February and, more recently, Reims (2-1) in added time.

Born in Paris, Fofana knew the young selections of the France team until he was under 19, before opting for the Côte d’Ivoire team, whose jersey he wore for the first time in 2017.

The Marc-Vivien Foé prize, named after the Cameroonian footballer who died on June 26, 2003 at the age of 28 after suffering cardiac arrest in the middle of a match, is awarded by a jury of around 70 people made up of journalists, consultants and even former players, from a list of 12 players established by the sports services of RFI and France 24.
