Like a Dragon: Ishin! will only have Japanese voices, the producer explains why

Franchise Like a Dragonformerly Yakuza in the West, Japanese culture transpires, immersing us in modern neighborhoods or in more ancient times of the land of the Rising Sun. The immersion is total with voices in Japanese, but some titles still had English dubs. This will not be the case for Like a Dragon: Ishin!.

The remake unveiled during the Tokyo Game Show 2022 takes us to 1868, obviously with a very dated vocabulary. And that’s why Ryu ga Gotoku Studio decided that the title will only be dubbed in Japanese, with subtitles for players from the rest of the world. Masayoshi Yokoyama, producer of the franchise, explains:

The specialized vocabulary and the way people spoke in Bakumatsu times would make sentences incredibly long, so it just wouldn’t work. This time we are doing subtitles.

Masayoshi Yokoyama admits all the same that the English dub works for other games in the franchise, such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, thanks to new technologies to adapt the movement of the lips according to the language in particular, and this episode greatly pleased the English-speaking public thanks to that. But on the other hand, Yakuza 0 has been a gateway into the franchise for many players, and it only has Japanese voice acting.

For Like a Dragon: Ishin!, so it will be the same thing, the characters will only speak in Japanese, with a phrasing of the time, you will have to read to understand everything. As a reminder, the release date of the game is set for February 21, 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, you can already pre-order it against €53.99 on Gamesplanet.
